Emily, A Self Portrait
Fine Art Portrait Series & INstallation
Emily, A Self Portrait is a photo series & gallery installation created under the mentorship of Accra Shepp at the School of Visual Arts, using still photography, physical set pieces, and an immersive sound design composition to create a “composite self portrait.” The series was selected for exhibition at a juried show at SVA’s Chelsea Gallery from April 28 - May 17, 2022. Press release for the exhibit is available here.
The piece is based on the idea that this collection of sounds, objects, and images - featuring performers of all different genders posing as Joseph’s ego, “Emily” - evokes a more accurate picture of the artist than any actual photo of their own face and body. The photo subjects are styled in a mix of their own clothes and Joseph’s personal wardrobe, and photographed in the real-life locations Joseph inhabits, alongside her actual friends and family.
The photo prints are surrounded by items from Joseph’s life, and accompanied by a sound design composition consisting of original instrumental music and dialogue recordings of the performers, recorded to loop forward and in reverse as viewers move back and forth through the scenes on display. Depending on which direction the music is playing, different voices can be heard.
