Posed - Short Film

Posed (2022 - Work In Progress)

Experimental Narrative Short Film

Posed is an experimental narrative short film exploring the relationship formed by two queer & trans artists while collaborating on an art piece.

The film begins with the artists being shown a pair of photographs they posed for, which launches them into a series of impressionistic flashbacks as they reckon with their reflections in the images and the memory of the connection they formed while posing for the photos. The film differentiates between the two opposing sequences — the present viewing of the photo prints and the romanticized memories — through visual contrast. The present sequences are shot in a standard 16:9 aspect ratio with a muted blue color palette, while the fantasy flashbacks are letterboxed into a 2.2:1 cinematic aspect ratio and shown in high contrast black and white.

The piece serves to address the intensity of emotions brought on by an artists’ creative process, and the fleeting but powerful bonds formed by collaborators. It pulls heavily from 2000s & 2010s indie music & film traditions, both in its minimalist production techniques and sound design. The film does not use any dialogue, and is scored only by a somber, but shaky guitar track meant to mirror the handheld camera movements throughout the piece.

Posed was devised & staged in collaboration with actors and theatre artists Julian Hermano and Red Guhde.

Currently in post-production.
